Mount Merrion

Connected Living:
New Front and Rear Extensions
Integrate Function & Flow
at Mount Merrion

One of several detached two‑storey homes in Mount Merrion, this residence originally featured separate ground‑floor rooms—a living room, kitchen/dining area, and playroom—linked by a central hallway, with an isolated garage accessed independently. Upstairs, four bedrooms, a bathroom, and a terrace completed the layout.

The brief was to transform the current residence into one that fit this family’s particular needs. A revised layout was called for with the key requirement of a shared space for family living containing a kitchen, dining and snug. These were to be separated from the more functional rooms. Upstairs was to be expanded to add a new master bedroom with ensuite, a larger third bedroom and another ensuite. The front elevation was to be altered to provide a sheltered entrance and more coherent appearance that worked with the extension over the existing terrace.

At the rear, a full‑width extension now houses the open‑plan family zone: the kitchen sits on one side, with a pantry tucked at its end, flowing into a dining area that frames garden views. A cozy snug occupies the opposite side. Large sliding doors open onto a new patio, flooding the space with natural light.

A compact service core—utility, plant room, and WC—anchors the center of the ground floor, keeping the family hub uncluttered.

To the front, a single‑storey addition enlarges the sitting room and den while unifying the previously disjointed façade. A recessed, sheltered entry offers a welcoming transition from street to home. The separate sitting room and den provide flexible retreats for different family activities.

Upstairs, side‑and‑rear extensions create a new front bedroom and a generous master suite with ensuite bathroom and walk‑in wardrobe. A second ensuite was added between the existing bedrooms. A new staircase leads to further accommodation within the expanded roof volume, illuminated by rooflights.
